The ESX control unit family for safety-relevant applications includes both the tried and tested third generation as well as the innovative fourth generation. The new ESX-3CS currently completes the third generation.

With the fourth generation, STW is using a new processor platform, the Infineon Aurix, which is available in several variations. As a result, a new platform concept is developing here which can be used for control units and I/O modules of the fourth generation, but also with intelligent sensors.

The control units are certified according to SIL2 / PLd and allow a division of the application into safety-relevant and uncritical functions. With the two versions XM or XL that are configurable through the extension boards, the use of a safety extension board or an optional combination of boards for uncritical applications can be called on.

Both generations are freely programmable in the language "C" and in CODESYS. Likewise, MATLAB / Simulink is supported. The toolset and framework openSYDE, available from 2018, supports the development of the definition of I/O and CAN parameters and their assignment beyond the debug and test phase up to commissioning, parametrization and in to service.

STW also provides training courses showing the quick way to achieve a safety approved control unit. In these, they explain functional safety and which requirements are demanded by the standard EN ISO 13849. Furthermore, safety functions and their features are introduced. The courses guide you to comply with saftey requirements on the development process and propose a schedule for processing these requirements.
