STW at bauma 2025: Seamless automation and digitalization of construction machinery

At the center of STW's trade fair appearance at bauma 2025 is a transparent mobile machine that impressively demonstrates the possibilities of interconnecting all STW technologies. High-performance controllers with AI integration, functionally safe control systems, robust sensor technology, communication modules, software and comprehensive services are seamlessly integrated and enable the realization of innovative construction machines that exceed the requirements of demanding manufacturers.

All automation and digitalization solutions from STW have been developed for use in construction, agricultural, forestry and municipal technology as well as in other special vehicles. The products have robust housings and protection classes up to IPX9K. As a specialist in functional safety, STW offers control units with special safety certifications. In addition, both these control units and the communication modules are prepared for the upcoming demanding EU regulations of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).

The smart combination of automation, IoT and AI solutions from STW enables machine manufacturers to meet customer requirements in terms of functional safety, cyber security, efficiency, sustainability, digitalization, data security and operational convenience.

Which STW products and technologies can be found in the demonstrator?

High-performance platform HPX.ai-vision

The HPX.ai-vision is a newly developed, high-performance automation platform that enables the realization of highly automated or fully autonomous applications. The HPX.ai-vision uses a multiprocessor system to analyze and process sensor data from high-resolution cameras, LIDAR, radar and time-of-flight sensors. This data can be recorded simultaneously and processed with AI support to carry out a comprehensive environmental analysis and make smart decisions based on this analysis. The HPX.ai-vision gives functionally safe mobile robotics applications a level of intelligence that was previously only possible with multiple controllers. At the same time, the HPX.ai-vision offers the well-known STW robustness and does not require active cooling.

At the same time, the high-performance platform supports Linux, enabling intuitive software integration and straightforward connectivity with connected controllers and cloud solutions using connectivity modules. The implementation of AI and robotics applications is also quick and easy thanks to the user-friendly software environment and comprehensive STW support.

ESX.4cl-ag controller

The flagship of the ESX.4 controller family has a powerful multi-core processor with six 300 MHz cores and a wide range of interfaces, e.g. 6x CANBUS and 4x Ethernet (3x as single-pair Ethernet). There are also 56 low-side and high-side outputs as well as two 10 A half bridges for controlling electric motors. The optional i.MX6 ultralite coprocessor (with Linux support) provides additional computing power and a large amount of memory. This enables data processing or the implementation of various protocols via CAN, Ethernet and simple mobile communication gateways within the machine as well as across machine boundaries to cloud solutions.

With SIL 2 / PL d safety certification and optional ASIL B certification, the ESX.4cl-ag is equipped for the most demanding applications with special functional safety requirements. For applications in agricultural engineering, there is certification according to Ag PL d. For higher data throughput in agricultural engineering, the ESX.4cl-ag already offers all the necessary functionality for the use of high-speed ISOBUS.

TCG-4 connectivity module

With the TCG-4 from STW, all networking options are available to construction machinery. The connectivity module supports communication via 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. Networking between machines, to intelligent infrastructure or cloud-based computing services, for example via the STW IoT offering based on the AWS (Amazon Web Service) ecosystem, is therefore easy to implement. Over-the-air updates can also be securely transferred to the machine with the TCG-4.

On the machine, Ethernet and CAN interface(s) enable data exchange with controllers, displays and sensors. The direct interface to the user is implemented via USB, Bluetooth or WiFi. The TCG series is already pre-certified for the EU's RED-DA cyber security directive, which comes into force in mid-2025.

The TCG-4 can be programmed intuitively via the Linux operating and development system.

Intelligent sensor technology

The demonstrator features an SMX.igs-a inclination sensor with IMU (Intertial Measurement Unit) functionality and an SMX.dms-a strain sensor.

The SMX.igs-a measures accelerations, rotation rates and inclination values in all three spatial axes and is available in variants with PL b and SIL 2 / PL d safety certification.  Various filter algorithms can be used to ensure high level of measurement stability within the freely selectable measurement range.

The SMX.dms-a detects mechanical deformations in mobile machines, for example in the chassis or in lifting systems. The sensors are extremely compact (installation height 25 mm) and therefore particularly easy to integrate. Thanks to protection class up to IPX9K and minimal measured value deviation even at extreme temperatures, the SMX.dms-a sensors are optimized for applications with the highest demands on resistance to environmental conditions and forces.
