Connectivity is more than just pushing data into the cloud

STW approaches the networking of mobile machines with a holistic perspective that yields comprehensive benefits. In a research project focused on digital twins in the construction industry, STW contributes not only hardware but also expertise in interfaces, protocols, and real-time communication.

STW collaborates with industry and research partners to develop digital strategies and concepts that enhance the lives of the target industry and machine operators. While STW's communication modules, sensors, and compact controllers primarily serve as hardware for data acquisition, processing, and transmission, the company regularly engages in extensive research initiatives in collaboration with research centers, machine manufacturers, and software experts. An ongoing example of this approach is the MiProcess2Twin project, which involves not only STW but also the Technical University of Munich and machine manufacturers Bauer and Wacker Neuson, along with Fielddata.io and Straightlabs.

The project's objective is to integrate the existing IIoT infrastructure on construction sites with advanced AI capabilities, thereby creating a digital twin of the construction site. This digital twin aims to optimize and automate decision-making processes in construction, such as soil compaction. The ultimate goal of the research project is to develop a flexible and interoperable digital twin that can be applied across all construction processes and machine categories on the construction site.

STW not only supports the project with appropriate hardware, including TCG-4 telematics modules, an SMX.igs-e inclinometer, and an HPX high-performance platform but also focuses on data streaming requirements. Questions addressed include: How can vertical and horizontal communication concepts be effectively implemented? What level of latency is acceptable? Which data interfaces and protocols are suitable?

The investigation encompasses the entire process holistically, with STW contributing its expertise in interfaces, protocols, software, and M2M communication, extending beyond the role of a traditional hardware supplier. In addition to this project, which centers on the construction industry, STW is actively involved in numerous other research projects in the fields of agricultural engineering, logistics, and automotive.
